Ida Pauline Rolf
Ida P. Rolf was born in the Bronx, NY on May 19, 1896. She graduated from Barnard College in 1916, amidst World War I. Ida was given a unique opportunity for a woman to work at the Rockefeller Institute doing research under the head of the biochemical laboratory. She later obtained a PhD in biochemistry at Colombia University.
Ida began developing Structural Integration in the 1920's as a method to help the chronically disabled. This method was first known as Postural Release and its goal was to organize the body structure in relation to gravity. In 1971, Ida founded The Guild for Structural Integration, which later became The Rolf Institute of Structural Integration. With the help of her son Richard, Ida continued to refine Rolfing and to research its effects. She taught classes throughout the country from her base in New York City. Throughout her life, Ida was published many times. This includes her book titled Rolfing: The Integration of Human Structures. Ida died on March 19, 1979, but her work was continued through her son and many close colleagues. Her revolutionary methods influenced the lives of many and will continue to do so as other individuals practice her methods of healing.

"This is the gospel of Rolfing: When the body gets working appropriately, the force of gravity can flow through. Then, spontaneously, the body heals itself."
